Best of 2010

Can you believe that only a few days are left of 2010? I am taking some time this week to reflect on everything 2010. Since Wednesday is my usual Mostly Wordless day, I figured I would share my top five creations this year. I selected these pieces for a number of reasons, and they aren’t necessarily my best work. Read on!

Sailboats on the Chesapeake by Claudine Intner. Collage on canvas. 24 x 48 inches. 2010

Sailboats on the Chesapeake by Claudine Intner. Collage on canvas. 24 x 48 inches. 2010

1. “Sailboats on the Chesapeake” was one of a number of pieces that challenged me this year. I actually started the piece in 2009. The original plan was to make something to go above our bed, but when finished and framed, the piece was just too big! So now it is hung quite happily in our living room.

“May his memory be a blessing” by Claudine Intner. Art quilt. Approx. 26 x 26 inches. 2010

2. “May His Memory Be A Blessing” was also a challenge and proved how 2010 was all about finishing what I start. I set out with the goal of making a quilt to memorialize my husband’s grandfather. I struggled with balancing a lot of family photos and quilting techniques. And boy was printing photos on fabric nerve racking! In the end, I think it turned out pretty well and was a comfort to Scott’s grandmother.

3. I love this photograph! We are blessed to live along the Chesapeake Bay and I love it so! I find the water so calming.

4. For the second year in a row, I was able to attend Art and Soul in Hampton, Virginia. It was a very rejuvenating experience. One of my favorite pieces was this mixed media piece which I did in Traci Bautista’s Graffiti Glam Collage class. It was a breakthrough that allowed me to explore faces more in my work.

Sleeping Beauty by Claudine Intner. Collage on board. 8 x 10 inches. 2010.

5. I loved making Sleeping Beauty! For years, my collages of people were faceless. This year I finally took the plunge and explored the features of the face with my unique style of collage. This piece is available in my Etsy shop.

What was your favorite creation this year? Did you make a breakthrough?

I hope you had a great week! I have been super busy getting ready to open my online shop in October.  This week’s Follow Friday has a mostly fiber focus… How many f’s can I cram into one sentence? Funny.

Mostly Wordless Wednesday with Temple

Temple Grandin

Sketch of Temple Grandin by Claudine Intner

So technically Wednesday is Mostly Wordless Wednesday on my blog. But some days I can’t be wordless!

Did you see the Emmys this weekend? I was so excited to see one of my heroes Temple Grandin there. Temple is an inspiring women with autism. HBO made a movie about her life this year, and it won numerous Emmys. Yeah! It was such a joy to see Temple there among a see of evening gowns in her customary western shirt. I just love Temple!

Monday morning I was watching the following clip of Temple at TED and decided that I should really do a piece about her. So I quickly grabbed my markers and sketched out an idea for an art quilt. I am thinking that the actual quilt will have one of her quotes on it. I just need to find one first! I am very excited about this idea.

New Work

After a long summer of setting up a new studio, it is nice to finally have some new work to share. As many of you know, I have been working in collage for many years but recently started exploring art quilting. Lynn Krawczyk graciously chose my project Art Now for Autism as the recipient of this year’s Breaking Traditions Art Quilt Exhibit fees. The Breaking Traditions exhibit has an autism theme in our honor. I finally finished my pieces for this exhibit and shipped them off to Lynn, and I would love to share them with you!

Autism Mom

Autism Mom by Claudine Intner. Art quilt. 12 x 12 inches. 2010.

Autism Mom is dedicated to all the mothers of kids on the autism spectrum. We work so hard to get the best for our children and frequently put everyone else first especially the child with autism.

This piece was an experiment for me. I have been exploring ways to get the women in my sketchbook on to final works of art. This time I used fabric paint on plain white cotton fabric. I did a couple of pieces with the paint and now want to try combining the paint with additional pieces of colored fabric. Isn’t experimenting fun?

Self Portrait

Self Portrait by Jacob Intner with the help from Claudine Intner. Art Quilt. 12 x 12 inches. 2010.

For the second piece for the exhibit, I decided I wanted to work with my son Jacob who is 9 and has autism. I thought it would be a great edition to the exhibit to have work by a child with autism. Jacob drew the self portrait and included one of his favorite things — NUMBERS! Jacob has had a passion for numbers and letters since an early age. He drew the picture and then I added the background color in his absolute favorite color red. I also did the quilting and binding. Now Jacob wants to make a quilt for his bed!

A special thank you to Lynn Krawczyk for putting together the Breaking Traditions Art Quilt Exhibit! I look forward to seeing everyone’s submissions. The exhibit will debut at the American Sewing Expo from September 24-September 26, 2010 in Novi, Michigan. The exhibit will then be on tour during 2011. If you would like to make a donation to Art Now for Autism’s fundraising efforts on behalf of Autism Speaks, please visit our donation page. THANK YOU!
